At UTS, the concepts of equity and social justice are key to our core and purpose – we are recognised widely as supporting inclusivity and valuing diversity. Cited as a WGEA Employer of Choice since the inception of the award, we are now among the first Australian institutions to receive the Athena SWAN Bronze Accreditation for our commitment to action addressing gender equity in the STEMM disciplines.

Our vision is to be a leading public university of technology recognised for our global impact. We are a dynamic and innovative university, ranked by the Times Higher Education as Australia’s top young university, and located centrally in one of the world’s most liveable cities. With a culturally diverse campus life and extensive international exchange and research programs, UTS prepares graduates for the workplaces of today and tomorrow.

  About the role

In this role you will pursue research into the mechanisms of context fear learning and memory modulation. This position is part of a large project that investigates how contextual memories are acquired, strengthened and updated by further experience and the neural bases of these effects. These topics will be investigated using a multi-level approach including behavioural testing in normal and transgenic mice, in combination with innovative techniques such as optogenetics, chemogenetics and in vivo calcium imaging to establish causal links between cellular alterations and behaviour.

You will be responsible for designing experiments and producing publishable data within research projects agreed with the team leader, Professor Vissel, and aspire to have the data and results of such research published in high profile journals.

You will be willing and able to work with mice and rodents in a number of paradigms related to studying learning and memory. Other aspects of the work will include imaging and cellular and molecular techniques including confocal and two-photon microscopy and optogenetic and chemogenetic manipulations. Ideally, therefore you will have experience with learning and memory theory and fear conditioning or related learning studies in rodents and experience in the associated techniques

  About the Centre

The Centre for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine is a priority initiative of UTS, aiming to become a sustainable, world-leading hub of research excellence. The PDRFLM will support the Centre in this endeavour, including the development of research funding applications and contribution to world-standard research outcomes.

The Centre, led by Professor Bryce Vissel, pursues research in the neuroscience of cognition, movement and related neurological diseases. The Centre is divided into various overlapping and complementary research streams, directed to high impact scientific research related to

understanding the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in learning and memory. The laboratory environment requires effective communication across disciplines and team.
