Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics: Xavier Salvatella

The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) is an independent, non-profit research institution engaged in basic and applied biomedical science. It is based in the Barcelona Science Park (Parc Científic de Barcelona, PCB), a Centre in which first-class public research converges with the private sector in a stimulating scientific environment.

IRB Barcelona was founded in October 2005 by the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya), the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Barcelona Science Park and is administered through a private foundation. The Institute currently has more than 430 members, of various nationalities, who work across disciplines to advance research in the biomedical sciences.

The Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics (LMB) at IRB Barcelona, lead by Xavier Salvatella, aims at understanding the relationship between the conformational changes occurring in large multi-domain proteins and their role in physiology and disease. The laboratory has a special focus on proteins with intrinsically disordered regions that are often drug targets for oncology and neurodegenerative diseases.

The LMB seeks to appoint a postdoctoral researcher with experience in performing and interpreting NMR experiments to study the structure and dynamics of biomolecules in solution. The candidate appointed will have access to one 800 MHz and two 600 MHz Bruker spectrometers, all equipped with cryo-probes, and to state of the art facilities for the expression, purification and biophysical characterization of biomolecules.

DUTIES

• Clone, express and purify isotopically enriched proteins for biomolecular NMR.
• Analyze and interpret the data to provide information about the structure, dynamics and interactions of proteins with other proteins, DNA and small molecules,
• Contribute with her/his expertise to other projects of the laboratory that involve NMR in solution.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

• PhD in Biomolecular NMR in solution.
• Experience in protein expression in E. coli and in protein purification.
• If possible experience in protein expression in insect and mammalian cells.

• Experience in the use of biophysical techniques such as fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopies, isothermal titration calorimetry, microscale thermophoresis, dynamic light scattering, surface plasmon resonance.
• Experience in analysing the structural properties of intrinsically disordered proteins.
• Highly independent, motivated, ambitious, and collaborative individual.
• Good organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently.
• Fluency in English.
