Postdoctoral position in Virology (2 years) : Umeå, Sweden

The department of Clinical Microbiology seeks a postdoctoral researcher in virology for the project "mosquito-borne zoonoses in animals and humans." The position is located in Umeå, Sweden.

Description
The post-doc will work in a research group that conducts research on vector-borne and zoonotic viral infections and we are looking for a post-doc virologist that will work with mosquito-borne viruses. The group collects and analyzes mosquitoes from all over Sweden with respect to the viruses that mosquitoes carry and what viruses that they are competent to transmit. The methodology used includes molecular biology, classical virological methods (viral culture, plaque reduction neutralization test, etc.), entomology and immunofluorescence. Position is full time for 2 years, and can start as soon as possible or by agreement.

Work duties
Virological and entomological research on infected mosquitoes and the collected mosquitoes. Responsibilities include characterization of viruses and mosquitoes, isolation of virus from mosquitoes, determination of mosquitoes as competent virus vectors, i.e. mosquitoes where the virus can multiply in. Some of the work will be performed in BSL-3 laboratories. Analytical work, results compilation and writing scientific articles are also included.

Qualifications required
A PhD degree, preferably not more than three (3) years old. Good knowledge about cultivation of viruses and cells, entomology, RT-PCR, real-time quantitative RT-PCR, immunofluorescence, molecular biological methods, and work in BSL2 / BSL3 laboratory. Previous studies of viral competence of mosquitoes and collection / species determination of mosquitoes is an advantage. The applicant must have a thorough knowledge of virology.

Other desirable qualifications
The applicant should have the ability to perform research independently in the laboratory and the ability to interact with others. The candidate should also be proficient in written and spoken English and have good organizational skills.
