An ARC-funded postdoctoral position is now available to work in the research group led by Prof. Peter Lay at the University of Sydney and to provide synchrotron research support for A/Prof. Hugh Harris form the University of Adelaide.

This is an opportunity to conduct cross-disciplinary research and visit major global synchrotron facilities. Supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students will also be made available.

You will be involved in collaborative studies into multi-modal imaging of cells and tissues in relation to metal anti-cancer and anti-diabetic drugs and the causes and treatment of metabolic diseases (including aspects of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative diseases). You will be required to travel as needed, approximately every two months or so, as you will be making extensive use of the Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne and the Advanced Photon Source in the USA, and other major vibrational spectroscopic, nuclear microprobe and mass spectrometric imaging facilities. Based at the University of Sydney, you will also conduct sample preparation and other biochemical assays.

To be successful in this position you will have:
• a PhD in Chemistry or other related Scientific field
• proficiency in the collection and analysis of synchrotron and other imaging and spectroscopic data
• experience in the use of synchrotron facilities for imaging biological samples
• a demonstrated ability to conduct research in synchrotron imaging and spectroscopy, and other imaging techniques
• a background in cell culturing and/or biochemical assays (desirable)
• demonstrated ability to conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision either independently, or as a member of a team
• an ability to supervise students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels
• excellent organisational and communication skills
• experience in research record keeping and the preparation of research papers for publication
• the eligibility to work in Australia with the ability to commence at short notice.

The position is full-time fixed term for two years and three months subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.

Remuneration package: $98K p.a. including base salary $82K, plus leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation.
