Characterisation of electron transport in bacterial ‘nanowire’ multiheme cytochromes.
This project will use time-resolved optical spectroscopies to quantify rates of electron transfer in a series of suitably modified multiheme cytochromes purified from Shewanella oneidensis. These proteins are capable of transporting electrons over distances exceeding 100 Å within and outside of cells such that they underpin the use of S. oneidensis in microbial fuel cell and electrosynthesis applications. You will work with Professor Julea Butt on this EPSRC-funded project that will be performed in close collaboration with Dr Jochen Blumberger at University College London where atom-scale QM/MM predictions of electron transfer rates in the relevant proteins will be performed. Experiments at the University of East Anglia will be performed in collaboration with Professor Steve Meech in the School of Chemistry and Dr Nick Watmough and Dr Tom Clarke in the School of Biological Sciences.
