Happy Easter!

Among the overwhelming news across the world, something positive is coming soon. If you are living abroad while working as a visiting scholar or a post-doc, you must have noticed that several companies have started to advertise their fun and delicious products; yes, I am talking about Easter!

Easter is among the most important religious holidays in the United States, as well as many other countries. Easter or Resurrection Sunday, is a festival that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Although Easter is a religious holiday, it has become more and more popular all over the world, and now it is even celebrated by non-religious people because of the nice message of happiness and joy that it spreads.

Easter Facts

  ·         Easter falls on a different date each year, but Easter is always a Sunday. This year Easter will be celebrated on April 12th, 2020.

  每年复活节的日期都各不相同, 但是复活节一定都是在周日。今年复活节是2020年4月12日

  ·         Most Christians and Catholics refer to the week before Easter as “Holy Week”.

  ·         In countries where Christianity or Catholicism is recognized as a state religion, Easter is often a public holiday.

  ·         In the United States as well as in many other countries, Good Friday (which occurs two days before Easter Sunday) and Easter Monday are public holidays as well.

  ·         Some retail stores, shopping malls, restaurants, financial institutions, stock markets, and public schools are closed during the Easter Holiday.

  ·         Churches hold special services during Easter Weekend.

Chocoholics’ Dream!

Easter is a great time to indulge into your sweet tooth and eat all that candy you have been craving. Every year, more than 90 Million chocolate Easter bunnies and 91.4 Billion chocolate Easter eggs are produced in the United States. Another popular type of candy during Easter is marshmallow, Americans buy more than 700 million Marshmallow Peeps during this holiday. There is no surprise then that after Halloween, Easter is the biggest candy consuming holiday. Around this holiday, stores will have entire aisles full of chocolate bunnies and chocolate eggs. It is very common for families to gift chocolate to its members, particularly to kids. It is also common for companies to give chocolate to its employees, and for schools to give chocolate to the children. But, why do we eat chocolate bunnies and eggs during Easter?

Well, traditionally the hard shell of the egg represents the tomb and the emerging chick represents Jesus, whose resurrection conquered death. While the rabbit is used because of the animal's high reproduction rate, and since Easter coincides with Spring, there is a multiplication of life; plants, flowers, fruits, and food. Nowadays, the tale of the Easter Bunny and the Easter Eggs is more related to the arrival of Spring.

How will Easter be different this year?

Easter Egg Hunts are traditional games played by children during Easter. Eggs are decorated by the families and their children, and then hidden inside their house or preferably in a garden, for the children to go find. The White House is no exception to this tradition, every year they hold a number of Easter festivities including a massive Easter Egg Hunt.

In this event, the eggs are painted colors derived from the White House: the Green Room, the Blue Room, the Red Room, the Vermeil Room, and the Rose Garden. The children attending will receive gift bags, and the annual event features games, stories and an appearance by the Easter Bunny. The highlight for the kids is using a wooden spoon to see who's the fastest to roll eggs across the lawn.

However, due to the common problem the world is currently facing, the First Lady Melania Trump canceled the White House Easter Egg Roll this year out of caution. Social-distancing is also forcing churches to embrace new ways of worshiping. Many churches are rapidly shifting or expanding services online in time for Easter. Catholic archdioceses in major cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans and Portland have closed churches with some encouraging priests to livestream Mass.

The Easter bunny may also need to get creative this year (and keep its social distance), as treats may not be as readily available. However, if you took your family with you to your visiting scholar or post-doctoral position abroad, Amazon is a good option to get candy for your kinds online. Be safe and Happy Easter!
