  Another year has gone by and it’s time to celebrate the beginning of fresh year full of possibilities. If you are living abroad while working as a visiting scholar or a post-doc, you must have noticed that everyone is getting on a festive spirit and that New Year’s decorations are everywhere!

  又一年过去了,是时候庆祝新年的到来啦,因为新的一年充满无限可能。如果您在海外做访问学者或博士后,此时您一定注意到每个人的脸上都洋溢着节日的喜悦,新年的装饰也随处可见!

  New Year’s Eve is celebrated every year on December 31st all over the world. People start counting backwards together and out-loud 10 seconds before the New Year begins. It is a big deal and everyone feels very excited about it.

  人们通常在每年的12月31日庆祝跨年。新年即将开始的时候,人们相聚一起并大声进行十秒倒数计时。每个人都对这项盛大的活动感到非常兴奋。

  How do we celebrate it?  我们怎么庆祝呢?

Celebrate All Night! 熬夜庆祝

  v  Eat with friends/family.  和朋友/家人相聚一起吃饭。

  v  Go to parties & dance all night long.参加派对并通宵歌舞。

  v  Have some drinks, especially champagne. 开怀畅饮,特别是香槟。

  v  Get hats, horns, glasses, confetti, etc. You will need to make some noise when the New Year arrives.  准备好帽子、喇叭、眼镜、彩纸屑等等。以便新年到来的时候一起躁动起来。

Dress Up 盛装打扮

  v  Wear new and fancy clothes. New clothes are believed to give you a ‘fresh start’ on the New Year.

  v   穿新衣、扮美妆。人们相信全新的着装会让您在新年里有一个全新的开始。

  v  Wear red underwear if you want to find love.

  v  如果您想要收获爱情,一定穿上红色的内衣哟。

  v  Wear white clothes if you will celebrate at the beach.

  v  如果您要在海滩庆祝新年,别忘了穿白色的衣服喔。

Fireworks Displays 放烟花

  v  The best fireworks displays are in: NYC, San Francisco, L.A., Las Vegas, Boston, Disneyland and New Orleans.

  v  观看放烟花最佳的去处有:纽约、旧金山、洛杉矶、拉斯维加斯、波士顿、迪士尼和新奥尔良。

  v  The Fireworks start on January First when the clock hits 0:01.

  v  当时间定格在一月第一天的0:01分时,就开始燃放烟花啦。

  v  There will be thousands of people, and several streets and subway stations will be closed, so get there early to get a good spot.

  v  当天必定是人山人海,部分街道和地铁站会处于关闭状态,所以记得早点到,选一个好的观赏位置。

  “Ball Drop” Countdown at Times Square – NYC

纽约时代广场“落球仪式”倒计时

  v  The 1st celebration of NYE in Times Square was in 1904, which was when the first subway line in the city opened.

  v  纽约时代广场的第一场跨年庆祝活动是在1904年,这也是这座城市第一条地铁开通的时间。

  v  Best seen along Broadway, from 43rd St. to 50th St. & along 7th Av.

  v  百老汇最佳观赏地段是43号街道至50号街道间,以及第7大街。

  v  Starts at 6pm, but the place fills up early in the afternoon & then no one else can get inside. So get there super early!

  v  下午6点开始,但是上午早些时候就已经人山人海,无法再进入,所以记得要尽量早些抵达。

  v  No large bags or umbrellas are allowed.

  v  不允许携带大背包或雨伞。

  v  No alcohol.

  v  不允许带酒。

  v  There are no restrooms or place to seat. So it is better not to take small children.

  v  因为没有洗手间或者坐的地方,所以最好不要带小孩。

  v  Don’t go there if you are afraid of crowds or small spaces. Police may push people to minimize space, you should maintain calm and do everything the police asks you to do.

  v  如果您有人群恐惧症或狭窄空间恐惧症,请不要去那里。警察可能会推动人群以减少空间,您要保持镇静,按照警察的指示做就好。

  v  It is very cold so wear many layers of clothes.

  v  A New Year’s kiss is supposed to represent what the New Year will bring.

  v  Right after the countdown, when the clock strikes 0:01, you should kiss your significant other.

  v  就在倒计时后的0:01分,您就要亲吻您最重要的另一半啦。

  v  Single people may also find a new fling to kiss at midnight on the spot.

  v  单身的人也可能会在现场找到一个新的对象然后亲吻她/他。

  v  The tradition is old and very popular and it is believed to bring good luck and nice beginning on the New Year.

  New Year’s Resolutions

新年计划

我的新年计划是减肥,但目前,我已经丧失了减肥的动力(上图)

  v  People make a list of resolutions which goal is to help them become better versions of themselves.

  v  人们会做一个计划清单,这些计划可以帮助他们变成更好的自己。

  v  Popular New Year’s Resolutions are: losing weight, exercising more, reading more, quit smoking, play less video games, spend more time with family members, eat less junk food, etc.

  v  新年计划最流行的目标有:减肥、多做锻炼、多阅读、戒烟、少玩一些电子游戏、多陪伴家人、少吃垃圾食品等。

  In conclusion New Year’s Eve is a time to get together and celebrate a fresh start. Remember to always wish a Happy New Year to your coworkers and friends when you see them.

  总而言之,新年是大家欢聚的时间,也是庆祝新年开始的好机会。见到您的同事和朋友时,记得和他们说一声新年快乐~
