Position overview

The ANU College of Medicine, Biology and Environment (CMBE) brings together medical, biological, population health, psychological and environmental sciences in six schools: The ANU Medical School, The Fenner School of Environment and Society, The John Curtin School of Medical Research, the Research School of Biology, the Research School of Population Health, and the Research School of Psychology. Together the schools integrate high level research with a research-led curriculum that encompasses all of these different areas.

The John Curtin School of Medical Research, Australia's national medical research institute, is part of The Australian National University, currently ranked 19th in the world by QS World University Rankings®. We are seeking two enthusiastic early to mid-career researchers to join the School in a newly established The Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) Cancer Biology and Therapeutics Department headed by Professor Ross Hannan and the Genome Science Department headed by Professor David Tremethick. These positions offer the opportunity to participate in well-funded internationally competitive research within a dynamic environment fully equipped with technical platforms for next generation sequencing, bioinformatics, flow cytometry/cell sorting, advanced microscopy, a robotic high content drug and target discovery platform screening facility, world class animal facilities and strong links to pharmaceutical industries and the clinic.

Position 1: Department of Cancer Biology and Therapeutics : This is a five (5) year appointment.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work on an NHMRC funded project within the Cancer and the Nucleolus laboratory under the supervision of the Department Head. This project will;

(1) determine the chromatin features and chromatin modifying factors required for reactivation of silent ribosomal RNA genes (rDNA) during malignant transformation;

(2) determine the molecular mechanism(s) of malignant cell dependency on chromatin remodelling of the rDNA repeats;

(3) translate the findings in lymphoma to other haematological and solid tumours to develop clinical biomarkers that predict sensitivity to novel small molecule drugs that target rDNA transcription, which we have developed and are currently in clinical trials to treat patients with solid and hematologic cancers.

If you have strong skills in cancer cell biology, molecular biology including transcription and chromatin biology (in particular chromosome conformation capture technology such as 3C, 4C, 5C and Hi‑C), we would welcome an application from you. Familiarity with mouse and xenograft models of cancer would be advantageous.

Position 2 : Department of Genome Sciences : This is a three (3) year appointment with a possibility of extension for the fourth year.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work on an NHMRC funded project within the Chromatin and Transcriptional Regulation Laboratory under the supervision of the Department Head. This project is focused on investigating:

(1) how the epigenome is stably inherited or altered to determine cell fate; and

(2) how the epigenome coordinately regulates patterns of gene expression at a global level to control cell function by studying genome architecture.

If you have strong skills in molecular biology including gene transcription, epigenetics, chromatin biology and/or functional genomics, we would welcome an application from you. Familiarity with bio-informatics analyses of CHIPseq, or RNAseq data would be advantageous.

ANU offers a competitive remuneration and benefits package, a friendly and collaborative work environment, generous leave entitlements, flexible working arrangements, a relocation allowance, generous superannuation, salary packaging arrangements including child care, and the potential to support dual-career arrangements
