Postdoctoral Fellow In Immunology & Protein Biochemistry, Boston University (2542)

Boston University

Job Description

The Boston University Pulmonary Center, Bosmann Lab is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow for projects on the molecular immunology of infections with a focus on protein biochemistry.

We are especially interested in candidates with prior experiences in protein structure analysis, monoclonal antibody production, protein-protein interactions, recombinant protein production and protein mutagenesis to expand the current spectrum of expertise in our multidisciplinary team.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pneumonia and sepsis are life- threatening complications of microbial infections with profound disturbances of the immune system. In the current absence of definitive treatment options, ARDS and sepsis represent an enormous problem for health systems worldwide. Our laboratory is dedicated to obtain a better mechanistic understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of bacterial, viral and parasitic infections (BSL1-3) towards the evaluation of new therapeutic targets. Please see our recent publication in Nature Communications. 2020 Aug 12;11(1):4035. We are especially interested in novel genes for which several transgenic mouse strains were generated in our laboratory.

We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow with outstanding career potential to promote our experimental and translational research. Special areas of interest are the role and structure of novel genes involved in inflammation, pathogen recognition, host-pathogen interactions, macrophages, neutrophils, cytokines, and related signaling pathways. Pathogens of interest are S. pneumoniae , Legionella spp. , E. coli , N. brasiliensis , SARS-CoV-2 , Influenza and others. The projects will be tailored to meet the individual qualifications and interests of the Fellow. For example, the nature and extent of protein biochemistry, molecular biology techniques, immunology methods, bioinformatics or a focus on surgical mouse models can be discussed with the applicant.

The projects will involve a broad spectrum of immunology and biochemistry methods together with opportunities for transcriptomics (scRNA-Seq, TOTAL- Seq) and (phospho-)proteomics including the data analysis as supported by our Bioinformaticians. Another area of interest is genome editing by RNA- guided nucleases (CRISPR-Cas9) for genome wide screens.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will have opportunities in designing as well as conducting independent projects. New graduates and experienced researchers with a strong record of publications are welcome to apply. An MD, PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant field is required and a strong background in Immunology, Protein Biochemistry and/or Molecular Biology is preferred. The ability in initiating, conducting, evaluating and reporting of research studies is essential.
