Job Description
The Critical Materials Institute at the Ames Laboratory, a Department of Energy National Laboratory affiliated with Iowa State University, is searching for a qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate.The postdoctoral researcher will perform cutting-edge research on designing and developing systems for applications of critical materials. As a part of the duties, the candidate will perform innovative research with the goal of optimizing the use of critical energy materials in electromagnetic and electrochemical systems. The critical materials of interest will include those identifiedathttps://www.ameslab.gov/news/news-releases/cmi-expands-research-in-tech-metals-rapid-growth-in-electric-vehicles-drives. The candidate will be responsible for finite element analysis with focus on electromagnetic and electrochemical systems. As part of a U.S. Energy Innovation Hub, the candidate is expected to perform independent and cross-cutting research in partnership with industry and academia. Additional duties include writing quarterly reports, publishing and presenting results, and supervising students.
The ideal candidate is able to communicate effectively to a wide variety of audiences, is comfortable working in a cross-cutting, multidisciplinary research environment, and is a self-motivated individual who is willing to take initiative and leadership of research problems.
Required Qualifications: 1) Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or closely-related disciplines. 2) Ph.D. must be completed prior to start date.
Preferred qualifications: 1) Demonstrated experience with finite element modeling of electromagnetic systems. 2) Experience using commercial finite element analysis software packages such as ANSYS Maxwell, MagNet, MotorSolve, or similar finite element software. 3) Experience coding finite element. 4). Experience with the design and characterization electrical machines. 5) Experience in battery cell electrochemical and thermal modeling. 6) System prototyping and industrial experience will be considered an advantage.
