Job Description

The Critical Materials Institute at the Ames Laboratory, a Department of Energy National Laboratory affiliated with Iowa State University, is searching for a qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate.

The postdoctoral researcher will perform innovative research on magnetism and magnetic materials including rare earth permanent magnets, ferrites and other magnetic materials. The candidate will also perform research in substitution and recycling of critical materials including those identified at https://www.ameslab.gov/news/news-releases/cmi-expands-research-in-tech-metals-rapid-growth-in-electric-vehicles-drives. The candidate will be responsible for design, synthesis, processing and characterization of materials. As part of a U.S. Energy Innovation Hub, the candidate is expected to perform independent and cross-cutting research in partnership with industry and academia. Additional duties include writing reports, publishing and presenting results, and supervising students.

The ideal candidate is able to communicate effectively to a wide variety of audiences, is comfortable working in a cross-cutting, multidisciplinary research environment, and is a self-motivated individual who is willing to take initiative and leadership of research problems.

Required Qualifications: 1) Ph.D. in experimental Material Science, Condensed Matter Physics, Chemistry or closely-related disciplines. 2) Ph.D. must be completed prior to start date.
Preferred qualifications: 1) Experimental experience with synthesis and characterization of permanent magnetic materials. 2) Experimental experience with synthesis and characterization of other magnetic materials. 3) Experience working with rare earth elements and other critical materials 4) Experience with using magnetic materials characterization tools including VSM, SQUID, SEM, XRD, XRF, TGA, DSC, etc.
