The Immunology and Innate Immunity teams in La Jolla, California are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to investigate innate immune cell plasticity mediated by cytokines, co-stimulatory molecules, and interactions with the microbial world. This is a joint project between Janssen and Dr. Omid Akbari, Associate Professor of Immunology at The University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. The candidate, initially home-based at La Jolla, will be mentored by investigators from Janssen and by Dr. Akbari and the research work will be performed at both sites.This position presents a unique opportunity to the candidate to carry out research in both academic and pharmaceutical research environments, benefitting from daily interactions with the group of established advisors with diverse experiences. The project will involve identification of differentiation cues for mouse and human innate immune cells, mapping of intracellular signaling pathways involved in plasticity, and analysis of epigenetic changes associated with differential cell fates.

The successful candidate should be highly motivated and show enthusiasm for discovery, with a recent or expected PhD or MD/PhD in immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, or other closely-related field. Research experience in the creation and troubleshooting of immunocyte cell activation or differentiation assays, handling of human lymphocytes, and identification and/or isolation of rare cells using flow cytometry is required. Key attributes should include independent thinking and reasoning, excellent written and spoken English, and the desire to collaborate. Experience with experimental models of lung inflammation, dose response analysis of drugs or experimental compounds in cell culture studies, immunoblot, lymphocyte retroviral transfection are desired. The qualified candidate needs to have demonstrable evidence of scientific productivity, as reflected by 1-2 publications in Immunology-related peer-reviewed journals.
