Postdoctoral researcher in Information Retrieval for Creative Industries : Amsterdam, Netherlands

The Informatics Institute and the Department of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, together with theNetherlands Institute for Sound and Vision invite applications for one four-year PhD position and two three-year postdoc positions. The positions are part of the NWO-funded project MediaNow, which is funded within the Creative Industries program. The aim of the project is to develop and test open source search solutions for exploring large multimedia archives. The project's target users are media-professionals. This postdoc vacancy in Information Retrieval for Creative Industries will be jointly within the Informatics Institute and the Department of Media Studies. The postdoctoral researcher will be part of a team that also includes a PhD candidate in Information Retrieval and a postdoctoral researcher in Media Studies, supervised by Prof. José van Dijck of the Department of Media Studies. Project description MediaNow supports the creative process in broadcast production. It supports radically new ways to explore repositories of media, with a focus on personalised search and story-based visualization. The innovations proposed by the MediaNow project are situated at the interface of computer science and media studies and they come in three kinds: we will develop, test and release self-learning search algorithms that adapt and improve their behavior while being used; we will create robust methods for semantically analyzing content in media archives and we will develop new search engine result page presentations that provide automatically generated storylines as narratives for professionals in the creative industries. The algorithmic solutions will be implemented in the research environment of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision.
