Eligibility: The successful applicant should have a good honours degree in photonics, theoretical physics or experimental physics, or an appropriate closely related discipline. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a related master’s degree at distinction level. Relevant experience in fibre optics, laser science, optical engineering, optical measurements and numerical modelling will be advantageous.

Scholarship Description: The projects are available in the fields of mode-locking fibre lasers and newly emerged area of pulsed ultra-long fibre lasers. The projects will include theoretical and experimental studies of pulsed fibre lasers including: pulsed random fibre lasers; advanced fibre mode-locked laser schemes with extended cavity, pulsed Raman fibre lasers, and dispersion-managed dissipative solitons in fibre lasers. What does it cover? This studentship includes a fee bursary of £3,996 to cover the home/EU fees rate plus a maintenance allowance of £13,863 in 2014/15. Applicants from outside the EU may apply for this studentship but will need to pay the difference between the ‘Home/EU’ and the ‘Overseas’ tuition fees, currently this is £10,914 in 2014/15.
