Postdoc Position

Ethical, social and regulatory aspects of citizen science in biomedicine and healthcare

Christian-Albrechts Universität, Kiel -Institute of Experimental Medicine

Campus Kiel
Postdoc (TV -L 13 100%)
Duration and Starting Date: three years, starting immediately (or as soon as possible), Salary depending on qualifications.

A post-doctoral position is available to work on the project "Ethical, social and regulatory aspects of citizen science in biomedicine and healthcare", funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research.

The post is situated within the Institute of Experimental Medicine at the University of Kiel and overseen by its Professor of Biomedical Ethics, Alena Buyx, and by Professor Barbara Prainsack at the Department of Social Science, Health & Medicine at King's College, London (UK).

The post holder will undertake empirical, desk-based (and, if mutually agreed, ethnographic) research into new and emerging forms of citizen science within the field of biomedicine and healthcare; prepare materials to inform analysis of the ethical and social issues; and contribute to the formulation of recommendations for policy making in this area.

Candidates should have a PhD or comparable degree in bioethics or in a relevant social science discipline (e.g. political science, sociology) or medicine. They should have a demonstrated interest in issues of participatory medicine and/or citizen science and proven potential to conduct and publish research at an international level.

In year three of the project, the post holder is expected to undertake an 'implementation test' of the policy proposals, working for a limited period of time in a cooperating company in Frankfurt. Therefore, flexibility and willingness to travel are essential, as are experiences in desk-based research, strong analytical skills, excellent online and social media literacy, and the demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary way and in different professional settings. Spoken and written fluency in English is essential; (passive) knowledge of German would be an asset, but is not required. Residence requirements can be discussed on an individual basis.

Applications of women are specially invited; in the case of similar qualifications, competence and specific achievements, women will be considered on preferential terms, within the framework of the legal possibilities. Candidates with disabilities with equivalent qualifications will be given preference. Weekly working time is currently 38 hours and 30 minutes.

The position is temporary and project-based.

Please send your application (a cover letter, CV, two relevant writing samples of not more than 5,000 words each (can be excerpts), and contact details for two references - all in one pdf file) with our reference number 557.209.CK to karriere@uksh.de.

Closing date is 2014-05-19.
