Post-Doctoral Researcher/Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher HRB Clinical Research Faculty and School of Public Health

Position summary

The HRB Clinical Research Facility, at University College Cork (HRB CRF-UCC) is a collaboration between University College Cork (UCC) and the Health Research Board (HRB) aimed at providing the dedicated infrastructure, experienced research and support staff, and necessary quality/regulatory oversight that are critical for the successful conduct of patient-focused research.

The CRF-UCC Statistics, Data and Analysis Unit (SDAU) supports a wide variety of patient-focused research in the areas of study design, statistical analysis, research data management and FAIR data stewardship. Several of the studies we support are aimed at the development and evaluation of clinical prediction models/algorithms for diagnosis or prognosis. To increase supports for these projects, we are recruiting an experienced post-doctoral researcher with the appropriate expertise in clinical prediction modelling and/or machine learning.

In the short term, the researcher will contribute to an existing programme of research aiming to develop a biophotonics-based medical device for cancer diagnosis, in collaboration with the Tyndall National Institute. Other existing projects relevant for this role include the development of a similar diagnostic device based on mass spectrometry, and ongoing efforts to characterize the cancer tumour microenvironment and other patient/tumour characteristics to help better target treatment decisions, including treatment de-escalation (in collaboration with Cancer Research @UCC). In addition to working on these projects, the post-holder will also have the opportunity to lead their own line of methodological research, working in collaboration with international experts in clinical prediction modelling; and to develop consultancy and collaborative skills through our work advising clinician researchers seeking to develop prediction models aimed at improving patient care. Finally, the post-holder will have the opportunity to help lead the development of broader CRF-UCC supports for clinical prediction modelling and diagnostic medical devices, which is currently an under-supported area of strategic importance.
