National University of Ireland Galway

Postdoctoral Researcher (Embedded System Design and Development) - Smart Sensors Lab, College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, NUI Galway (NUIG RES 146-21)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a postdoctoral researcher to join our team at the Smart Sensors Lab, College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is funded by the SFI Research Centre for Medical Devices, CURAM, and is available from September 1st, 2021 to August 31st, 2023.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will develop an electronic embedded system for powering and communication with an implantable biosensor. The system will act as an external reader unit for a sensor-based medical device. The candidate will work as part of the team developing the medical device in this project funded by the Science Foundation Ireland. The core technical work includes the design and modelling of reader unit, development of prototypes, interfacing of biosensor with the reader unit and communication antennas, and pre-clinical validation on the bench as well as suitable animal model.

The position will require an individual with expertise in modelling and development of embedded systems, field-programmable gate array (FPGA) based system design or microcontrollers, interfacing of microcontrollers, electronic circuit design, and prototyping. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with academic, industry and clinical partners to design, develop and evaluate the efficacy of the proposed medical device.

Duties: The successful candidate shall be expected to carry out the following duties as part of his/her role:

•Literature and IP search as required by the project

•Design and development of the embedded system for reader device to meet the key requirements of the project.

•Selection of materials and parts for prototype development and design validation

•Interfacing of the reader system with communication antennas and implanted wireless biosensor.

•Characterisation of the reader system for robustness under the operating conditions.

•Computer modelling and bench testing for interoperability of key components of the device including biosensor, reader unit and antenna.

•Development of the device prototypes for pre-clinical testing.

•Procurement of equipment and consumables for the project.

•Interface with clinical, commercial and technical experts.

•Work with other team members to plan project activities and set key milestones.

•Prepare scientific reports and research articles.

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

•Demonstrable knowledge of embedded systems design and development technologies.

•Demonstrable knowledge of FPGA and microcontrollers-based system design and interfacing.

•Experience in electronic circuit design and modelling.

•Evidence of expert knowledge of Verilog HDL, Xilinx ISE (or similar modelling tools), or microcontroller development tools.

•Track record of publishing in biomedical and electrical engineering journals.

•Highly motivated and passionate about new scientific discoveries.

•Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

•Clear evidence of good inter-personal skills.

Desirable Requirements:

•Speciality (postgraduate research) in embedded systems design and development.

•Experience in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

•Knowledge of FPGAs, microprocessors and microcontrollers-based system designs.

•Experience in the presenting of research findings to technical / non-technical audiences.

Salary: €38,632.00 to €45,942.00 per annum (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply).
