is recruiting aResearch Associate in Spatial Data Science and Geospatial Infrastructure (postdoc, m/f)

• Ref: 21-06

• Full-time/40 hours per week, 100% based at LISER

• 3 years fixed-term contract (possible extension of 2 years under conditions)

• Start date: as soon as possible

Your role

Your mission within the UDM department will be divided into two main topics:

1) Setting up a Spatial Data Infrastructure and developing associated tools within the UDM department of LISER. The main tasks will be related to:

 - Acquire, document and structure spatio-temporal and multi-scale geographic data, including classical census and gridded data but also spatialized big data, and real time data from distributed sensors and API-based opendata platforms;

 - Develop structures and software for storing, updating and combining data in a geodata platform;

 - Develop automated processes for geographical data retrieval and visualisation;

 - Operate the technical dissemination of geographical information and analyses through opendata platforms, web mapping, online dashboards and mobile apps;

 - Write well-designed, efficient and re-usable codes, software libraries and packages;

 - Develop new methods and tools to ease thematic cartography analysis and answer topical questions in close collaboration with colleagues from UDM;

 - Monitor latest technological change in geomatics and spatial data infrastructures fields in general and open frameworks particularly;

 - Engage with spatial data producers and users in Luxembourg and abroad;

 - Perform dissemination activities and networking within both stakeholders and researchers audience in close collaboration with other team members.

2) Developing an innovative Spatial Data Science research agenda and producing research outputs related to the above activities. The main tasks will be related to:

 - Initiate and develop targeted research collaborations with Luxembourg and international institutions;

 - Apply for external funding;

 - Publish methodological research papers especially in geographical and data science journals, with specific attention to reproducibility;

 - Support UDM researchers in spatial analytics and visualisation and co- publish in thematic journals;

 - Promote research results in international research conferences and networks;

 - Develop and promote original codes and packages within the research community;

 - Train and coach researchers and PhD students in both the use of local or remote geospatial infrastructures and in spatial data analytics and visualisation.

Your profile

 - PhD in Quantitative Geography, Geospatial Technology, Spatial Data Science, Geographic Information Science or equivalent with qualifications in line with the expectations of the position;

 - Peer-reviewed international publications, research experience and outstanding scientific achievements;

 - Proven programming skills in general and with geolocated objects in particular: (1) Automation of tasks and data processing (e.g. Python, Shell Scripts); (2) Development of applications for the Web (e.g. JavaScript, PHP,...) with visualisation components (e.g. D3.js); (3) integration with GIS or data analysis environments (plugins, scripts,... within or connecting QGIS, R,... );

 - Strong skills in data management and processing: PostgreSQL/PostGIS database administration; SQL and spatial SQL queries; Data modelling (conceptual data models); and ETL-type data processing;

 - Ability to elaborate innovative, coherent and feasible projects;

 - Ability to submit research proposals for external funding;

 - Research interests in line with the scientific topics of the UDM department.
