Geophysical/Geotechnical Researcher, School Of Civil Engineering/Irish Centre For Research In Applied Geosciences (ICRAG), 24 Months

University College Dublin

Description

Geophysical/Geotechnical Researcher, School of Civil Engineering/Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences (iCRAG), 24 months

The Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences (iCRAG) is a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded centre established in 2015. It brings together a team of researchers representing the full geosciences spectrum with a clear focus on the economic impact of the wider geosciences sector. iCRAG aims to transform applied geosciences research in Ireland by focussing resources into thematic areas and by requiring that research outputs are systematically embedded into industry to maximise impact. We wish to appoint a researcherin the field of Geotechnical Engineering / Engineering Geophysics. The successful candidate will work on the project “Multi-scale Investigation of Bio-Based Mineral Precipitation in Carbonate Bearing Granular Soils and Construction Related Waste”. This project is funded under the US-Ireland Centre to Centre scheme in partnership with the Center for Bio-mediated and Bio-inspired Geotechnics (CBBG), and the Energy Efficient Materials Research Center (EEM) in Queen's University Belfast.

The project aims to extend the domain of microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) and enzyme induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) as ground improvement technologies to carbonate-bearing soils. Both MICP and EICP will be investigated on these soils as sustainable alternatives to cement based technologies. More specifically, this post will involve: (i) conducting a literature review / evaluation of existing data to summarise existing knowledge on the subject area, (ii) assisting in the design of a series of large scale MICP/EICP tank tests on carbonate bearing soils, (iii) conducting an associated geotechnical and geophysical monitoring programme, (iv) processing and analysing the resultant geophysical and geotechnical data.

This is a research focused role under the supervision of a Principal Investigator. The role aims to develop your research skills, including, for example, the development of academic publications and funding proposals and the mentorship of graduate and undergraduate students.
