PhD position in Modelling of Large-Scale Energy Storage

JOB DESCRIPTION

The integration of variable renewable energy sources in the energy system requires flexibility on time scales ranging from hours to seasons. The chemical industry offers a huge potential for large-scale hydrogen or electrochemical storage and/or (electro)chemical processes aimed at producing hydrocarbons. The techno-economic feasibility of such processes needs to be considered in the context of the European energy systems in which they are embedded. Using numerical modelling, simulation and optimization, one can get quantitative insights in the requirements and economic viability of the different chemical conversion routes. In this project, we thus aim to extend state-of-the-art energy system models with appropriate representation of flexible chemical processes. Furthermore, modern approaches to (distributed) computing, optimization and machine learning offer possibilities to bring the current modelling approaches beyond the state-of-the-art.

We offer a PhD position in the Engineering Systems and Services department at the faculty of Technology, Policy and Management with a supervisory team at TPM and the faculty of Applied Sciences. The PhD research is part of the RELEASE project, www.nwo-release.nl, where a large team of top scientists cooperating with applied scientists and industry partners works on the next generation of large-scale energy storage technology.

REQUIREMENTS

We look for a candidate who combines knowledge of the energy system and physics/chemistry with excellent numerical modelling skills. Hence, we encourage applications from candidates with an MSc degree in one of the following fields (or related):

- chemistry or physics

- electrical engineering

- energy systems science

- applied mathematics
