德国尤利希研究中心(FZJ) 应用水文科学方向科学家/博士后职位

Research Scientist / Postdoc in applied hydrological science

Jülich Research Centre (FZJ)

Jülich, Germany

Work group:

IBG-3 – Agrosphäre

Area of research:

Scientific / postdoctoral posts

Job description:

In the coming decades, climate and land use change will have a significant impact on the performance of terrestrial ecosystems, posing major challenges to our society. At the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Agrosphere (IBG-3) we develop approaches to ensure the performance of ecosystem services (Food, Feed, Fiber, Energy) based on an improved understanding of hydrological and bio-geochemical processes in terrestrial systems. A combination of experiments, modelling and innovative observation technologies is used to bridge the gap between model, process and management scale.. We translate our research findings into management options that can be used by political organizations and decision-makers to address these societal challenges. Further information on our mission can be found here: www.fz-juelich.de/ibg/ibg-3/EN/Home/home_node.html

Your Job:

You work within the DFG Research Unit RealPEP, which aims to advance probabilistic flash flood nowcasts. The successful candidate will set up flood forecasting experiments using newly developed precipitation products, applying advanced hydrologic modelling and data assimilation technologies in supercomputing environments. Your tasks in detail:

• Develop a workflow applying physically based and conceptual hydrological models continuously merged with precipitation ensembles and hydrologic observations

• Generate large ensembles for probabilistic discharge nowcasting

• Improve the data assimilation methods towards a forecasting system prototype

• Develop a methodology for evaluating the quality of precipitation products to be used in flood forecasting

• Contribute to an international research team, publish in international journals and present results at international conferences

Your Profile:

• University degree in either geosciences, computer science, physics, civil engineering or applied mathematics and a PhD degree in a related field

• Experience in hydrological modeling, data analysis and HPC

• Knowledge in data assimilation is a clear advantage

• Programming skills with Python, R, Fortran or C/C++

• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in an international, interdisciplinary team across institutes

• Very good communication and organizational skills

• Good publication record

• Good command of English language

Our Offer:

• Vibrant international work place on an attractive research campus, ideally situated between the cities of Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Aachen

• Competent and interdisciplinary working environment

• Excellent framework in the areas of experiments and modelling

• Exceptional research infrastructure

• Attendance at national and international conferences and workshops

• Possibility for further scientific and technical training through international experts

• A comprehensive further training program, including career counseling, coaching and networking opportunities

• Flexible working hours and various opportunities to reconcile work and private life

• Initial period of 2 years (with possibility of extension)

• Full-time position with the option of slightly reduced working hours

• Salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD)
