About the Role

The Postdoctoral Fellow position, supported by investment from the Grain Research and Development Corporation, is focused on the goal of boosting micronutrient density in wheat grains produced on farms in southern Australia using the capability of synchrotron analysis. A field survey of wheat grains in southern Australia will identify the typical grain micronutrient concentrations. A series of glasshouse and field experiments will be carried out to test the effects of nitrogen status, Zn status, and crop stress (drought) on the loading of Zn from soil and foliar applications into seed and the distribution of the Zn in the seed. Growth and analytical facilities will be utilised at Murdoch University and appropriate beamlines will be used at the Australian Synchrotron. The Post-doctoral Fellow will be expected to submit competitive applications for beam time at the Australian Synchrotron. The Post-doctoral Fellow will develop collaborations with other GRDC investments in synchrotron-based research for the Australian grains industry.

What you'll bring to this role: A PhD in the area of Plant Science, Crop Science, Soil Science, or Environmental Science Demonstrated expert knowledge in the area of plant physiology and biochemistry, with a focus on the analysis of micronutrients using techniques such as HPLC/HPLC-MS, ICP-MS or NMR. Experience in the use of synchrotron-based approaches X-ray absorption and fluorescence approaches (e.g. XANES/EXAFS, XFM) for plant or soil research (including relevant sample preparation techniques) will be highly valued Demonstrated ability to engage in high quality independent research and publishing in peer reviewed journals.
