Job Description

Research Fellow in Biochemistry Job description

The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a Ph.D fellowship in biochemistry. at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Deptartment of Chemistry, Bioscience and Environmental Engineering. The postition is vacant from October 1st, 2020.

This is a trainee position that will give promising researchers an opportunity for academic development leading to a doctoral degree.

The appointment is for three years with research duties exclusively, or four years with both research and 25% compulsory duties. This will be clarified in the recruitment process.

Project title: Chlorophyll delivery to Cytochrome b6f The Cytochrome b6f is a chlorophyll-binding membrane integral protein complex that regulates light dependent electron and proton flow in photosynthesis. The chlorophyll molecule is evolutionary conserved in oxygenic photosynthesis; however, its biogenesis and function are unknown. We found in plants grown in darkness that in the absence of chlorophyll and photosynthesis, Cytochrome b6f binds the chlorophyll precursor protochlorophyll. We are interested to find out how the pigments are delivered and bound to the protein complex. The candidate will apply novel methodology for the isolation, purification and characterization of the machinery that delivers chlorophyll to Cytochrome b6f. Project focus is to increase the knowledge base in the field of light-driven electron flow in photosynthesis.

Work topics : Isolation of ribosome binding nascent chain complexes from etioplast membranes. Characterization of protein complexes regulating chlorophyll synthesis, translation, and Cytochrome b6f assembly. Protein analysis including mass spectrometry, bioinformatics, and single particle image analysis. Chemical synthesis and enzyme characterization.

Qualification requirements

We are looking for applicants with a strong academic background who have completed a five-year master degree (3+2) within Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biophysical chemistry, Biotechnology or Physics preferably acquired recently; or possess corresponding qualifications that could provide a basis for successfully completing a doctorate.

To be eligible for admission to the doctoral programmes at the University of Stavanger both the grade for your master’s thesis and the weighted average grade of your master’s degree must individually be equivalent to or better than a B grade.
