  Job Description

  The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Department of Medicine – Division of Gastroenterology, is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to fill a NIH T32 grant position. This position is to train future leaders in academic gastroenterology and hepatology and give trainees contemporary research skills and cutting edge knowledge to support digestive health. Under the direction of Dr. Maria Abreu, this position will advance the field of gastroenterology especially inflammatory bowel diseases. Dr. Abreu’s laboratory is focus on the host-bacterial interactions and, in particular, the role of toll-like receptor signaling in intestinal inflammation. This work has led her laboratory to investigate the microbiome of humans and murine models of IBD. Germ-free animal models will be use to examine the role of host-bacterial interactions in intestinal homeostasis, inflammation, and the microbiome.

  The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:

  Carrying out mammalian cell culture and microbial culture

  Assisting in the design and planning of experiments in collaboration with other labs and other laboratory members

  Being able to assist and direct laboratory staffs

  Assisting with animal experiments, particularly mice

  Performing DNA extraction and purification, PCR, ELISAs, Primer Designing including degenerate primers, Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE), Tube Gel Electrophoresis, Restriction digestion, DNA Sequencing, Southern Blot, Plasmid preparation, Cloning, Colony PCR, RNA extraction, Reverse transcriptase PCR, Real time PCR

  Collecting and analyzing data into written and graphical formats for publication, presentation in meetings, and grant applications

  Minimum Qualifications

  Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology or related field; or M.D. Prefer experience with molecular biology and immunology-based laboratory techniques such as PCR, Southern blots, DNA extraction and purification, PAGE, etc. Excellent sterile technique to work with cell and tissue culture. Good mouse handling technique and experience in mouse models preferred. Good oral and written communication skills with a good command of the English language. Ability to be organized, responsible, tidy, motivated and enthusiastic for basic research. Able to work well in a team. Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data. Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems. Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
