  Job Description

The University of Michigan, College of Pharmacy has a full-time opening for a research fellow in the Sun Lab (https://pharmacy.umich.edu/sun-lab).

Among other projects, our lab is interested in drug discovery and drug structure optimization for tissue targeting. The goal of our projects is to enhance success rate of drug development in clinical trials by developing methods to optimize compounds for improving efficacy and tissue targeting in relevant disease (Various cancers, Myelofibrosis, Rheumatoid Arthrisis, Ulcerative Colitis). A postdoctoral researcher position in medicinal chemistry is available for a highly motivated individual interested in Activity-DMPK driven structure optimization of small molecules. This position is within a multi-disciplinary and highly collaborative research group. The successful applicant should have a strong background in organic/medicinal chemistry but also show interest in other areas of research relevant to the lab (or to the project) such as, biology and pharmacokinetics.

  Responsibilities:

  • Create hypotheses, design compounds, and carry out multi-step synthesis of small molecules

  • Analyze complex data sets to generate hypotheses for structure and properties optimization

  • Regular report of research progress in group meeting and active participation in discussion

  • Work well independently and as a member of a highly collaborative team

  Required Qualifications:

  • PhD (or equivalent degree) in Organic/ Medicinal Chemistry

  • Strong ability to implement synthetic/medicinal chemistry design strategies to address compound liabilities

  • Solid mechanistic understanding to perform troubleshooting

  • Experience in molecular modeling or ligand/protein structure visualization to propose hypotheses for optimization (desired but not required)
