  美国桑迪亚国家实验室物理、核工程、材料科学、机械工程、电气工程博士后招聘

  Job Description

We have a new R&D technical staff position opening focusing on materials science problems with applications in the areas of alternative energy and national security. The role will emphasize experimental plasma-surface interactions studies in support of our Fusion Energy Sciences programs, which also include research on the design of plasma-facing components and the development of edge plasma diagnostics. In addition, you will develop programs in complementary research areas. This potentially includes topics such as the surface science of hydrogen storage materials, embrittlement of structural metals used in hydrogen energy infrastructure, and tritium science. On any given day, you may be called upon to: + Lead a diverse group of staff, technologists, postdocs and interns to initiate creative research directions in materials science and plasma-materials interactions + Apply unique surface analysis and microscopy techniques available at Sandia to determine how surfaces are modified by plasma-exposure + Develop novel experimental capabilities that enable surface characterization under non-ideal conditions (e.g. technical surfaces at high pressures / temperatures.) + Establish new collaborations with international partners and major domestic experiments that complement our R&D efforts + Respond to funding opportunities and lead proposals to establish new areas of research at the laboratory + Represent the laboratory at meetings with our program sponsors and contributions in leadership roles within the field + Mentor early-career staff, postdoctoral appointees, and graduate students + Publish in high impact journals and present research results on an international platform

  Required:

+ PhD in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline; + Publication and innovation record, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, technical books, or issued patents; + Experience with ultra-high vacuum systems and materials characterization techniques; + Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

  Desired:

+ 2 years research experience post-graduate + Familiarity with plasma characterization techniques and/or hydrogen/metal interactions + Experience with instrument design for materials characterization + Prior work involving large experimental collaborations + Demonstration of forward thinking and ability to anticipate science needs that are not yet present + Effective written and oral interpersonal skills

  Department Description:

The Energy Innovation Department is a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers working on fundamental scientific research and technology development that support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Our diverse portfolio of work includes the development of hydrogen as a practical clean fuel source, novel approaches to thermal management, and plasma-materials interactions for magnetic fusion energy. Projects range from the surface science of hydrogen storage materials to more applied engineering of hydrogen energy infrastructure. The department also leads complementary hydrogen-in-materials research supported by DOE’s Office of Fusion Energy Sciences. This work spans the breadth of basic plasma studies to major efforts in the plasma-material interactions and fusion nuclear science. Members of our team also invented the Sandia Cooler (recipient of R&D 100 award) and have demonstrated its utility for high-power solid-state lighting and other applications, as well as TwistactTM which can improve electrical power handling in large wind turbines. More broadly, the Energy Innovation Department is part of the Chemistry, Materials, and Combustion Center at Sandia/California. This center is home to much of the materials science research at the laboratory, and includes a variety of world-class surface science and microscopy capabilities.

  Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted. Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
