Job Description

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : Are you eager to utilize state-of-the-art equipment and methods to pursue research challenges? Do you want to join a dynamic team that helps tackle challenging technical issues impacting our nation's security? We are seeking Postdoctoral Appointees in quantum information science, particularly quantum device modeling. You will need to have strong interest and aptitude for computational modeling of physical qubits realized in semiconductor or trapped ion technologies, other quantum information processing technologies, and/or more general nanoscale devices. We also welcome applications from researchers with interest in time-dependent density functional theory methodology and the possibility of achieving substantially higher accuracy through quantum simulation on anticipated quantum computers. In addition to proven technical foundations, prior experience with scientific software development is a significant advantage. While this position is located at Sandia’s New Mexico site, you will have the opportunity to engage scientists at Sandia’s California site, as well as collaborators external to Sandia. Ability to collaborate with a diverse set of colleagues is a strong advantage in this position. On any given day, you may be called to: + Explore applications of quantum materials or atomic physics computational methods for investigating qubit response and performance + Explore applications of quantum algorithms to simulating realistic quantum systems (e.g., first principles descriptions of molecules and solids) + Develop or extend computational methods for simulating quantum behavior of atoms or materials using classical computers + Collaborate with experimentalists designing and testing prototype qubits to identify simulations that can illuminate the processes underlying observed device behaviors + Team with physicists, electrical engineers, and computer scientists developing software tools to support near-term quantum computing hardware + Collaborate with team members on journal publications and conference presentations, as well as participating in scientific conferences The organization actively supports life-long learning, as well as development and pursuit of new research ideas. Research staff have latitude and flexibility to delve into new interests to develop new project ideas and are encouraged to do so.

Required:

+ PhD in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, chemistry, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline plus a bachelor's in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) field + Programming experience in Python, Fortran, and/or C++ + A record of peer-reviewed publication and presentations at scientific conferences + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance

Desired:

+ Experience providing theoretical and modeling support to a team of experimental scientists + Demonstrated history of using numerical methods to better understand physical systems + Experience in quantum information theory and formalism, quantum algorithm development, tomography, quantum error correction, or modeling physical qubit + Scientific programming for high performance parallel computing, including expertise with MPI-based parallel programming + Knowledge of realizing physical qubits in semiconductor materials or trapped ions + Demonstrated ability to develop technical ideas and results and present them in oral and written form + Enjoy collaborating with a dynamic, innovative, multi-disciplinary team and the ability to pose and answer research questions based on the long-term goals of that team + Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Department Description:

The Quantum Computer Science Department (1425) resides in the Center for Computational Research. We pursue foundational research and development to enable creation of quantum information processors (QIPs) that will provide exponential speed-ups for selected computational problems. We are a team of computer- and computational-physicists whose expertise and pursuits include: computational modeling of physical qubits; theory and design of fault-tolerant QIPs; instruction set architectures for QIPs, evaluation of as-built qubits' performance and noise characterization; logical qubit design for real-world noise; performance assessment of many-qubit QIPs; quantum algorithm development; the physics of information; and development of methods and computational simulation capabilities for all of the above pursuits. Additionally, the QCS Department is part of an institution-wide, coordinated program that is focused on realizing practical quantum information processing and distributed quantum computing, near-term quantum sensing capabilities, quantum communications. The Department closely collaborates with researchers in allied areas working on similar pursuits; closely collaborates with experimentalist groups at Sandia working on developing practical qubits in various technologies; has strong working relationships with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) offices and other U.S. government agencies interested in quantum information science (QIS); and collaborates, broadly, with academic and commercial colleagues in the external QIS research community.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted. Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
