  Job Description

The Comstock Lab at Michigan State University in the Department of Physics and Astronomy is seeking a postdoctoral Research Associate for an immediately available position within the lab advancing research progress on topics of extreme in vitro single molecule biophysics.

The Comstock Lab is a new lab filled with scientists eager to push the boundaries of measurement and observation of fundamental biological molecular machines. We design and build novel optical trapping and fluorescence instrumentation that enable new modalities of single molecule biological measurement. The ideal candidate would have recently obtained a Ph.D. in Biophysics, Physics, Chemistry or Biochemistry or related fields and would already possess the following research experience: 1) experience using and developing single molecule experimental techniques including optical tweezers (preferably dual-trap high-resolution versions), single molecule fluorescence, FRET, etc. 2) wet lab experience including detailed experience with novel nucleic acid construct synthesis, including DNA- and RNA-based constructs, as well as labeling and purification of such constructs, and 3) research experience with protein molecular motors (e.g., helicases, polymerases etc.) and/or nucleic acid or protein folding. The successful candidate will also demonstrate the ability to work within a highly collaborative research environment and the potential to mentor junior members of the lab.
