The Sheltzer Lab at Cold Spring Harbor is seeking postdoctoral researchers for a funded project studying chromosomal aberrations in cancer.

Large-scale gene dosage imbalances are ubiquitous in human tumors. For instance, more than half of all breast cancers harbor an amplification of chromosome arm 1q, making this alteration more common in breast cancer genomes than mutations TP53, BRCA1, and BRCA2, combined. Despite the frequency of these aneuploidies, little is known about why they arise or how they affect tumor progression.

The Sheltzer laboratory is pioneering new CRISPR-based chromosome engineering methods to study the role that gene dosage imbalances play in tumorigenesis. By precisely manipulating cancer karyotypes, we can uncover the unique consequences of specific aneuploidies, absent any other genetic alterations. These approaches have revealed multiple unexpected ways that aneuploidy can affect cancer physiology. We are seeking postdocs who are interested in using these techniques to uncover how chromosomal aberrations and chromosomal instability can influence cancer initiation, drug resistance, and metastatic dissemination.

The Sheltzer Lab is a highly-collaborative environment that values rigorous research and that welcomes scientists from all backgrounds. We are located at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, an immersive research institute on the outskirts of New York City. Cold Spring Harbor is an NCI-designated Cancer Center, and every year over 10,000 scientists journey to Cold Spring Harbor to attend one of CSHL’s renowned Meetings and Courses.

More information on research conducted in the Sheltzer Lab can be found on our website at www.sheltzerlab.org.
