  About the Job

Applications are invited for a McKnight postdoctoral associate (job code 9546) in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering (SCSE) at the University of Minnesota, Duluth (UMD). The position may be renewed for up to two years based on performance and availability of funding. This is a 12-month teaching and research position beginning July 1, 2019 with teaching duties (2 courses annually) in the Advanced Material Science (AMS) Master’s program. The remainder of the time will be engaged in research in the areas of, and not limited to, additive manufacturing, lignin based polymers and Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites. Master of Science in AMS is a new graduate program at UMD directed towards students in science and engineering looking for careers in industry. The curriculum differs from traditional Master’s program with a dedicated first year ‘core’ curriculum that covers the life cycle of different materials (metals, ceramics, polymers and composite materials) in modules. The core program will be taught in an interdisciplinary fashion using translational and project-based learning methods with an emphasis on interactional expertise and real world connection. The deadline for priority consideration is March 20, 2019. Review of complete applications will start March 20, 2019, and continue until the position is filled.

  Job Duties

Teaching (50%): Teach two courses annually in the Advanced Material Science Program. Develop course content as needed. Collaborate with other interdisciplinary faculty members teaching the core program

Research (50%): Participate in the on-going research projects on additive manufacturing, lignin based polymers and FRP Composites. Co-author and present research papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Co-author grant proposals to internal and external agencies. Participate in collaborative meetings with experts from Natural Resources Research Institute and faculty members from Industrial & Chemical Engineering Departments. Supervise undergraduate and Master’s students. Develop Standard Operating Procedures and safety protocols as needed.

  About the Department

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) has undergraduate programs in Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Industrial Engineering (IE) which are both ABET-accredited and the department also offers two graduate degree programs: the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and the Master of Environmental Health and Safety. Our students are talented and engaged, both inside and outside of the classroom, and have an impressive track record in regional and national design competitions such as the United States Air Force Research Laboratories design challenge, the SAE Clean Snowmobile challenge, and high-powered rocketry competitions (e.g., the 2018 Spaceport America Cup).
