The Neurology Laboratory is well-funded by NIH, and other funding sources. We seek a highly motivated PhD in a related medical science who is interested in carrying out research on characterizing animal models of spinocerebellar ataxias with the ultimate goal of testing hypotheses on molecular mechanisms of cerebellar ataxias as well as novel ataxia therapeutics. The research objectives include understanding mechanism of neurodegenerative disease as well as testing novel therapeutic targets and therapeutics in disease models. The postdoc will join a well-established research program focused on developing therapeutics for cerebellar ataxia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and other neurodegenerative disorders. Located on the upper campus of the University of Utah, the position offers exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with a diverse group of investigators in both the Department of Neurology and the College of Pharmacy with a wide range of interests relative to the area of investigation, and a rigorous focus on developing therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases.

  Responsibilities

The post-doc will plan, design, and conduct experiments that are related to the project. Experiments may involve classical cell and molecular biology techniques, including cloning, transfection, cell culture assays, AAV gene delivery in mice, molecular profiling and in vivo testing in mice and rats. The duties and responsibilities of the postdoc are:

  1) Design experiments related to project hypotheses and objectives.

  2) Conduct research for the project including contributing to animal husbandry and genotyping as needed.

  3) Prepare and submit abstracts and manuscripts for publications.

  4) Supervise/train technicians and students involved in the project when necessary.
