Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Scientist Columbia University 749 reviews - New York, NY The Department of Surgery is seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher Fellow or Scientist in the areas of Polymer Science and Mechanical Engineering applied to Heart Valves. We seek highly motivated individuals who enjoy working in a team while concomitantly desiring to pursue their own ideas in a very supportive environment. Our lab and collaborating partners combine expertise in tissue engineering, stem cell, molecular & cellular heart valve biology, tissue biomechanics, polymer science, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, small and large animal models, medical device development, prototyping, clinical trial and patent writing. Our current projects include 1) the development of innovative heart valve medical devices with a potential for growth or expansion, based on mechanical engineered and tissue engineered concepts, 2) the development of biomimetic smart materials mimicking the highly organized heart valve tissue, 3) the development of cell-culture models to improve our understanding of heart valve biology applied to tissue engineering and to screen candidates biomaterials for heart valve medical device development. School/Institute/Unit: Physicians and Surgeons, College of Minimum Degree Required: Ph.D. Minimum Qualifications: All applicants MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered for the position. MD or PhD, BS in Polymer Science and/or Mechanical Engineering required Preferred Qualifications: Training and/or experience with: Tissue biomechanics including but not limited to mechanical testing. Numerical simulation of fluid dynamics and/or tissue mechanics and computational modeling. 3D CAD designing (Solidworks or other software). Fabrication/microfabrication methods including but not limited to dip molding, injection molding, stereolithography, electrospinning, applied to heart valve prosthesis fabrication, Background in polymer structure-function relationships, especially for elastomeric/viscoelastic polymers. Selection of biodegradable and non-biodegradable polymer based on required biological and mechanical specifications, including but not limited to elastomeric/viscoelastic polymers. Characterization of biodegradable and non-biodegradable elastomeric/viscoelastic polymer including GPC, NMR, DSC, WAXS. Experience with various polymer synthesis, and development of innovative biodegradable and non-biodegradable elastomeric/viscoelastic polymer. Cell culture. Biology methods including cell culture, histology, immunohistochemistry, PCR, Image J software. Experience with small animals (rats). Organ-on-a-chip technology. Stent technology in research projects related to heart valves, biology methods including cell culture, histology, immunohistochemistry, PCR, Image J software, experience with small animals (rats), organ-on-a-chip technology, stent technology and grant writing preferred.
