　　The University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center (UAB CCC) is one of the most prestigious in the country. It was one of the first eight NCI-designated Cancer Centers in 1972 and has been continuously funded for 46 years. It is the only CCC in a four-state region in the Deep South. The UAB CCC treats over 5,000 new cancer patients annually and has an extensive effort focused on delivering cancer care and conducting research in underserved populations. The UAB CCC has over 400 members conducting outstanding cancer research in six scientific programs. Center members receive approximately $100 million in extramural cancer research funds annually, including multiple program projects and large “team science” grants.UAB is one of 42 institutions with an NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award, which supports translational research and creates a supportive environment that synergizes with the UAB CCC to promote young investigators.

　　Position:

　　Post-doctoral researcher positions are available in the laboratory of Michael Birrer MD PhD focusing on the genomics of ovarian cancer and how an understanding of this can be translated into the better management of the patients suffering from the disease. Dr. Birrer is the Director of the UAB CCC and his laboratory is located in the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, Wallace Tumor Institute, UAB Medical Center,http://cancercenter.uab.edu/michael-birrer-m-d-ph-d/ .

　　Specific projects include: biomarker identification in early stage ovarian cancer, identification of “driver” genes in advanced stage ovarian cancer, proteomic analysis of platinum resistant ovarian cancer, creation of 3D and mouse models of ovarian cancer, testing of novel therapeutic agents against the disease, and characterizing the molecular features of long-term survivors.

　　Education/Experience:

　　Doctoral Degree in cancer/cell/molecular biology, proteomics, computational biology, biochemistry or related field required. Expertise in tissue culture, protein biochemistry & molecular biology technique, immunofluorescence microscopy RNAseq, analysis of large datasets, animal work preferred. Requires successful completion of a background check; qualified candidates may be asked to complete a pre-employment physical including a drug screen.
