Dark Diversity and eDNA as tools in biodiversity conservation
Aarhus University, Department of Bioscience, Kalø, Denmark opens a 1-year postdoc position in ecoinformatics with a clear focus on development of tools for cost-effective management and conservation of terrestrial biodiversity in Denmark.

The current research projects include applying dark diversity and eDNA as tools in biodiversity mapping and monitoring and development of a spatially explicit national indicator for conservation interest. The candidate will be involved in ongoing research project teams and is expected to lead scientific publications. The department hosts a unique national database from extensive N2000 monitoring programs and a national biodiversity dataset (biowide) covering multi-taxon biodiversity, eDNA and extensive mapping of the environment. The aim is to analyze these datasets to answer two key questions: 1) how can we use dark diversity, i.e., the absence of species from a site that is otherwise suited for them, to investigate what drives biodiversity in nature areas, and 2) how can we use environmental DNA in the mapping, monitoring and understanding of variation in biodiversity.

Qualifications
The candidate is expected to be a skilled ecoinformatic analyst with a background in community ecology. A general understanding of eDNA and its use in biodiversity monitoring is important, but skills in sequencing and bioinformatic analysis of eDNA is not required. It is an advantage if the candidate has experience collaborating on projects. We emphasize that the candidate must have good scientific writing skills.

The starting date is as soon as possible, and working place is located at Aarhus University, Kalø, Grenåvej 14, DK-8410 Rønde. There is funding for 1 year of employment. In case further external funding is procured within the academic area the candidate is estimated obviously qualified for, an extension can be possible for up to a total maximum of 4 years employment as a post doc.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Guidelines for applicants can be found here.

Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Further information on qualification requirements and job content may be found in the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.

All interested candidates are encouraged to apply, regardless of their personal background. Research activities will be evaluated in relation to actual research time. Thus, we encourage applicants to specify periods of leave without research activities, in order to be able to subtract these periods from the span of the scientific career during the evaluation of scientific productivity.
