Postdoctoral Appointee - Ultrafast light-matter Interactions in Quantum Materials

  · Sandia National Laboratories

  · Location: Albuquerque, NM

  · Job Number: 7051867 (Ref #: 662596)

  · Posting Date: Jul 2, 2018

  Job Description

Are you seeking an opportunity to explore new regimes of light-matter interaction between low energy excitations in quantum materials and plasmonic metasurfaces? If so, consider applying to join our team as a Postdoctoral Appointee at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT). In this role, you will collaborate with other CINT postdocs and scientists to perform ultrafast optical and terahertz spectroscopy of quantum materials, particularly in combination with metamaterials and plasmonic structures. The experimental systems available for these projects include several amplified femtosecond laser systems with wavelengths tunable from UV to THz frequencies, as well as a high field 8 T superconducting magnet. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Design and fabricate metasurface samples + Align optics and perform ultrafast laser experiments + Collect and analyze data + Publish and present your research

  Required:

+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in a STEM discipline + Experience in one or more of the following areas: femtosecond optical spectroscopy, terahertz spectroscopy, time-integrated optical spectroscopy (e.g., FTIR and UV-VIS spectroscopy) + Experience in condensed matter physics + Experience with electromagnetic properties of metasurfaces and sample fabrication + Good communication skills as evidenced by a record of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at scientific conferences

  Desired:

+ Knowledge of ultrafast lasers, solid-state physics, and/or nonlinear optics + Experience with Labview software and programming + Experience with data analysis/modeling using MATLAB or similar program(s) + Experience with fundamental physical processes of semiconductor nanostructures, carbon nanostructures, and/or strongly correlated electron materials

  Department Description:

The Nanostructure Physics department (01881) is one of two departments at Sandia that are a part of CINT. CINT is a Department of Energy/Office of Science Nanoscale Science Research Center operating as a national user facility committed to establishing the scientific principles that govern the design, performance, and integration of nanoscale materials. Through its core facility in Albuquerque and gateway facility at Los Alamos, CINT provides users from academia, industry, and government labs, open access to the tools and expertise needed to explore the continuum from scientific discovery to the integration of nanostructures into the micro- and macro world. CINT is an equal partnership between Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory.
