PostDoc Biological Oceanography

Deadline: 30 June 2018

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10%) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 72 million Euro and has approx. 950 employees.

The research unit “Biological Oceanography” of the research division “Marine Biogeochemistry” is offering a

Postdoctoral position in plankton ecology/pelagic biogeochemistry

starting on October 1st 2018.

Job Description

Perform innovative research at the interface of plankton ecology and pelagic biogeochemistry through a combination of experimental approaches, field surveys in biogeochemical hotspot areas, and numerical simulations of relevant biogeochemical processes. Acquisition and analyses of comprehensive data sets from pelagic in situ mesocosm studies (“KOSMOS”), including further testing of hypotheses gained from these data sets in laboratory experiments. The overall aim is to achieve a process-based understanding of biotic responses to ocean change (including deliberate manipulations) and their impacts on plankton communities and biogeochemical cycling. Specific topics may include quantification of element fluxes and trophic transfer within pelagic food webs (rate measurements, isotopic tracers, genetic techniques) or organic matter export (sediment traps, sinking velocity, respiration rates).

Qualification

We welcome applications from outstanding young investigators with a PhD in biological oceanography or related fields and publications in high-ranking peer-reviewed journals. Expertise in field or experimental work at the plankton community level, analysis of large ecological and/or biogeochemical data sets, ideally combined with experience in modelling of coupled ecological/biogeochemical processes, is desired. The willingness to participate in multidisciplinary teams in field campaigns with durations of several months is expected. The position will be integrated in on-going and upcoming research projects, including the ERCproject Ocean Artificial Upwelling (Ocean artUp) and the BMBF coordinated project Coastal Upwelling System in a Changing Ocean (CUSCO).
This is a full-time position according to 100% of a full-time equivalent. The position is available for three years and can be split, provided that participation in the long field campaigns is not compromised. The salary depends on qualification and can be up to the class E13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply.

GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.
