Postdoc Position Marine Geodynamics

Area of research:

Job description:

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 75 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

The research unit “Marine Geodynamics” is offering a

Postdoc Position

starting on October 1st 2018.

Project Description
“ARCHIMEDES I” will image the deep structure of the Fonualei Rift, where rifting of arc crust and widespread hydrothermal activity occur at the edge of the Niuafo’ou microplate. The role of the arc basement and the transition to adjacent backarc basin crust in this region has never been investigated in detail. Our study will use high-quality multi-channel seismic and refraction profiles to address a major unsolved question of submarine arcs: at what stage in the structural and thermal evolution of arc rifting does magmatic and hydrothermal activity set in and mineral deposits begin to form.
The Postdoc will deal with the processing, analysis and interpretation of the seismic data. This includes the processing of the MCS data up to the pre-stack depth migration, so that the resulting velocity field of the crust can be incorporated into the analysis of the wide-angle data. This information will be integrated into a startup model for the inversion of the wide-angle data. Iteratively evolving models later serve as input for tomographic procedures. In addition to the inversion of the wide-angle data, further amplitude analyses of the reflection amplitudes at selected instrument locations are planned in order to be able to make statements about the lithology. Furthermore, the job holder will assimilate the extensive bathymetric data, as well as the heat flow information and the magnetotelluric and magnetic data.

Qualification
- PhD in Geophysics or Petrology
- Knowledge in the use of marine seismological devices and in the processing of OBS-and MCS-data.
- Experience in the interpretation of various data sets (petrology, seismics, bathymetry) on scientifically viable statements and models
- Knowledge of magmatic and hydrothermal processes, petrology of submarine volcanic systems, and the structure of the earth's crust and lithosphere
- Very good written and spoken English skills
- Participation in the expedition SO267 with the research vessel SONNE (December 2018 – January 2019)
- Willingness to participate in further expeditions at sea as well as national and international business trips
- Sea suitability and experience with previous expeditions at sea would be eligible
- Willingness to work in an international team
- At least 3 publications as first author in international peer-reviewed scientific journals

The position is available for a funding period of 26 months. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the level 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position can not be split.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply.

GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.
