Queen's University Belfast - Centre for Experimental Medicine, School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences

The Centre promotes research excellence in Experimental Medicine acting as an integrative hub, linking various research elements and driving the invention and development of novel therapeutic compounds and molecular diagnostic tools through discovery science. 

The successful candidate will be a highly productive, ambitious and collaborative member of the Infection Biology research team led by Professor Jose Bengoechea in the Centre for Experimental Medicine. This 16 month position will involve working as part of a research programme in collaboration with AstraZeneca that seeks to establish first-in-kind host-directed therapeutics against the human pathogen Klebsiella pneumoniae. The project, at the interphase of microbiology and immunology, will utilise in vitro, and in vivo models of infection techniques and is based in a highly collaborative team.

The post is a senior role in the team and as such, successful applicants will have responsibilities in independent research, supervision, planning, day-to-day lab management, collaborations and outreach. The post is suited to a highly ambitious individual, preferably with previous postdoctoral experience.

The successful candidate must have:

  • PhD in Immunology, Molecular Microbiology, or a closely related area.
  • At least 3 years’ recent research experience in immunology or molecular/cellular microbiology.
  • Recent extensive hands-on experience in at least three of the following:
  • extensive experience with in vivo models (mouse model);
  • cell infections and assessing bacterial survival;
  • low cytometry;
  • assessment of immune system activation in vivo.
  • Recent high-quality original research publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals, commensurate with career stage.
  • Experience teaching/supervising /mentoring postgraduate/undergraduate/school students and visiting researchers in the laboratory.
