  Position Minimum qualifications:

  PhD in Cell Biology or Immunology or Cancer Biochemistry and a record of publishing research in top-tiered journals.

  Position Preferred Qualifications:

  The Cancer Biochemistry and Immunology labs in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff are looking for two talented postdoctoral fellows to join the research teams of Dr. Archana Varadaraj and Dr. Narendiran Rajasekaran respectively. Each position requires a motivated and enthusiastic individual with a keen interest and prior experience in the fields of Cancer biochemistry (Position 1) and Immunology (Position 2).

  Position 1: Supervised by Dr. Varadaraj is an NIH funded position for 3 years and aims to investigate hypoxia-mediated phenotype switching of cancer cells. The project will explore signaling and molecular pathways that initiate and mediate cellular transformation in in vitro cell culture models using a combination of biochemical techniques including immunoprecipitation, immunoblotting, protein interaction studies, post-translational protein modification and microscopy.

  Position 2: Supervised by Dr. Rajasekaran is an NIH funded position for 3 years. The project investigates the effect of of oncolytic viruses on NK cell mediated anti-tumor cytoxicity. The objective of the current research is to understand the effect of oncolytic virus therapy on NK cell mediated immunity. A strong immunology background is required, and a background in cancer immunology would be an asset. Experience working with NK cells is desirable but not necessary. Experience with flow cytometry (analysis and/or cell sorting), mice handling, primary cell isolation, molecular biology, cell culture, would be an asset.

  • Experience with using Adobe Photoshop, MS Office, ImageJ, Endnote and statistical analyses.

  Duties:

  • Participate in complex research work and independently review and evaluate data.

  • Maintains detailed records of experiments and outcomes.

  • Analyzes data and writes research progress reports including summarizing test results and assists in the preparation and writing of papers for publication.

  • Coordinates and/or conducts library and computer searches for research, to meet the needs of the project and improves tests that are unsatisfactory.

  • Assists in the complex design and implementation of statistical techniques for scientific research data collection and analysis.

  • Assists in judging the validity of data obtained from experimental procedures and recommends additional tests and/or modifications.

  • Report progress on the project to the PI directly.

  • Perform general lab maintenance as needed for the execution of their project.

  • Maintain a mouse colony, plans breeding strategies and performs necropsies and surgical procedures on research animals.

  • Assists in the development of written operating procedures and performs quality control checks to ensure procedures are followed.

  • Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.

  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.

  • Manuscript writing and presentation of data at lab meetings and at conferences.

  Background information:

  Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check.

  Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

  Finally, each year the Northern Arizona University Police Department releases an annual security report. The report is a result of the federal law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the school’s policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses. The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year’s Fire Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for Flagstaff on-campus student housing.

  Salary: Based upon level of experience. The funding Source for these positions are 100% grant funded for a full time position w/benefits at a Post-Doc type level with an NIH Post Doc salary cap. Until June 30, 2020 at which time the funding will end.

  FLSA status:

  This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Participation in NAU retirement plans is not available to Post-Doctoral Scholars.
