NIH-funded Postdoctoral Positions: Signal 0 of wound healing, inflammation, and regeneration
(Niethammer Lab, Sloan Kettering Institute, NYC)

We are a multidisciplinary team of experimental biologists fascinated by the chemical and biophysical mechanisms of rapid wound signaling in intact animals.

Central questions are: What are the first signals released by tissue injury? How do wound signals reach their target cells? How do they trigger inflammation, healing, and regeneration? Illuminating these questions will advance our understanding of devastating pathological mechanisms, such as sterile inflammation, fibrosis, and cancer initiation, as well as our ability to interfere with those.

One of our recent projects focuses on the biomechanical regulation of inflammation and leukocyte migration by the nuclear envelope using an interdisciplinary approach that utilizes artificial membrane systems, microfluidics, cultured cells, and live zebrafish (e.g., Niethammer et al., Nature, 2009, Enyedi et al., Nature Cell Biology, 2013, Enyedi et al., Cell, 2016, Huang & Niethammer, Immunity, 2018, accepted).

Project areas include:
• The mechanism of membrane stretch-sensing by peripheral membrane enzymes.
• The cytoskeletal regulation of nuclear envelope tension in cells and tissues.
• The physiological role of nuclear tension-induced inflammation during disease.

Candidates from bioengineering, biophysics, biochemistry, immunology, and cell biology are encouraged to apply. Experience with zebrafish is not required. Experience with quantitative imaging and analysis methods is advantageous. Proof of past productivity in adjoining fields is important. Creative candidates are encouraged to discuss their own project suggestions.

The position is best suited for versatile, goal-oriented candidates who enjoy interdisciplinary work, quantitative approaches, and want to answer basic biological questions in a biomedical context, and in intact animals.

o Initial funding is covered for at least two years. Internal MSKCC postdoctoral fellowships are available and relatively easy to get given proof of previous productivity.
o Subsidized Manhattan housing is available for at least three years.
o Salary levels are competitive.
o The MSKCC-Rockefeller University-Weill Cornell Medical College triangle campus is a thriving biomedical community, comparable in density and intensity to Harvard and MIT. But it is New York City—so we win!
