Research Fellow in Vision Sciences

University of Southampton - Clinical Neurosciences

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to join Prof Lotery and Prof Teeling’s research groups to undertake a leading role in our Gift of Sight funded study ”A novel model for dry Advanced Macular Degeneration as a tool in drug discovery of complement inhibitors.”

You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualification and laboratory experience with in vivo modelling. Previous experience in retinal biology and/or neurosciences would be an advantage. You should be a highly motivated candidate, capable of independently designing and carrying out experiments as well as intellectually contributing to the project to achieve its goals in a timely manner. Evidence of publishing in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals would be desirable.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The Lotery and Teeling groups investigate the role of inflammation and complement in causing age related macular degeneration which is leading cause of blindness in the elderly. The group’s focus is on understanding the basic mechanisms of this disease so as to develop disease specific therapies in order to improve vision.

Andrew Lotery is Professor of Ophthalmology and Jessica Teeling is Professor of Experimental Neuroimmunology at the University Of Southampton. They have collaborated successfully for many years and share joint lab space within the Clinical Neurosciences Research Group of the University.

Hence this exciting project offers the opportunity to work at the interphase of cutting-edge, multidisciplinary, translational research, developing novel treatments for retinal disease and translating these into clinical practice.

You will join a vibrant and dynamic research group and be expected to work as a team with other postdocs, PhD/undergraduate students and technicians. You will collaborate in an interdisciplinary manner with colleagues across the Faculties of Medicine and Biological Sciences in the University of Southampton. The candidate can expect a collegial and research-focused environment with mentoring and career development support.

The post is initially available for a period of 3 years.

Informal inquires may be directed to Prof Andrew Lotery a.j.lotery@soton.ac.uk
