Postdoctoral Appointee - Computational Plasma Modeling

Sandia National Laboratories
Location: Albuquerque, NM
Job Number: 7050505 (Ref #: 661255)
Posting Date: Mar 21, 2018

Job Description

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to focus on the development of a large-scale parallel computational plasma physics research capability. This role offers the opportunity to join a diverse, world-class team, from the Computational Mathematics, High Energy Density Physics Theory, and the Electromagnetic Theory Departments. This effort is partially supported by a DOE Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) and an ASCR / Office of Fusion Energy (OFES) SciDAC Partnership grant. Scientific applications include magnetic confinement fusion and magnetic implosion dynamics with relevance to z-pinch devices. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Support collaborative efforts developing robust and accurate computational formulations for multi-physics plasma systems and advanced scalable implicit-explicit (IMEX) solution methods + Perform software development and numerical experimentation + Travel (1-2 times per year) to support research collaborations or present at technical conferences

Required:
+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in physics, engineering, mathematics, computer science, or a related area + Experience with computational formulations and solution methods for at least two of the following: compressible fluid flow, electromagnetics, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) or multi-fluid plasma physics, hybrid methods (e.g. combining transport/collisional interactions, continuum/kinetic models, etc.). + Experience with finite element or unstructured finite volume methods for PDEs + Experience with software development in C++ + Experience in a collaborative research environment on problems comprising diverse application domains + Evidence of strong research achievements in relevant technical areas as demonstrated in the form of technical publications, presentations, software tools, and/or knowledge of applications

Desired:
+ Experience with numerical methods for partial differential equations with particular emphasis on hyperbolic problems and compressible plasma systems + Experience with computational models for magnetic confinement fusion applications or magnetic implosion dynamics with relevance to z-pinch devices + Strong proficiency with scientific software development + Excellent communication skills

Department Description:
The Computational Mathematics Department (01442) conducts research in computational and applied mathematics motivated by science and engineering applications of interest to Sandia National Laboratories and the U.S. Department of Energy. Members of the department interact and collaborate with a broad range of Sandia and DOE staff and also maintain a research presence in the external professional community by collaborating with universities and industry, publishing peer-reviewed literature, participating in professional societies, and refereeing and editing for journals.
