摘要:

Postdoctoral Fellow - Advanced Imaging Technologies : Heidelberg

Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Rome (Italy).   The Ellenberg group in the Cell Biology & Biophysics Unit is looking for postdoctoral fellows to study the dynamic organisation and structure of large macromolecular complexes, such as the nuclear pore and mitotic chromosomes. We are a multidisciplinary team consisting of biologists, chemists and physicists. The overall goal of our group is to systematically elucidate the mechanisms underlying cell division and nuclear organisation. We are developing a broad range of advanced fluorescence-based imaging technologies to assay the functions of the involved molecular machinery non-invasively, automate imaging to address all its molecular components, and computationally process image data to extract biochemical and biophysical parameters. Our research focuses on three areas: systems biology of mitosis, nuclear structure, and molecular mechanisms of meiosis and early embryonic mitosis.

Dependent on the candidate’s background and interest we envision projects in two research directions:

  • Correlative live-cell and super-resolution imaging to unravel 3D genome dynamics in interphase and cell division.
  • Correlative live-cell imaging and cryo-electron microscopy to study nuclear pore assembly at molecular resolution.

The successful applicant will apply and correlate advanced imaging technologies. Work will further include development of labelling strategies, which could include genome-editing, in situ hybridisation, and DNA PAINT technology. The work will comprise technical as well as discovery aspects and will be carried out both independently and with internal and external collaborators.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate should have a PhD in the life sciences or related disciplines and is expected to have a sufficient background in molecular cell biology and advanced imaging technologies, preferably super-resolution and/ or (cryo) electron microscopy. A profound knowledge in genome editing or image analysis and programming is an advantage. The successful candidate should be able to work independently, be very well organized, reliable, and enjoy working in an international team within a highly collaborative atmosphere. Excellent communication skills and fluency in English are required.

Application Instructions

Please apply online through www.embl.org/jobs   Please include a cover letter, CV and a description of research interests. Please also arrange for minimum 3 letters of recommendation to be included in the application documents.

Additional Information

For further information, please contact Dr. Stephanie Alexander, Research Manager Interviews are planned for the week of 11th December. Candidates should arrange to be available.   EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation.   Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
