Job Description

We seek to recruit a motivated postdoctoral fellow to the Davis Lab at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, CO to contribute to our studies on PROGRAMMED DNA ELIMINATION.

Programmed DNA elimination is a developmental process in which portions of the genome are reproducibly eliminated. This process occurs in diverse eukaryotes ranging from single-celled ciliates, nematodes, and crustaceans to birds and jawless fish (lampreys). In some nematodes, ~15% of the genome is eliminated in the somatic lineages during the 3rd through 5th cleavage (4 to 16 cell stage), while the germline genome remains intact. ~1000-2000 germline and early development expressed genes are eliminated. Chromosomes break, regions are lost, and new and increased numbers of chromosomes are formed. Areas under investigation include analysis in nematodes of
How genome regions are marked for retention or elimination
How break regions are identified and the mechanism of chromosome breaks
How eliminated chromosome regions are selectively lost from holocentric chromosomes
The contributions of epigenetic factors including histone modifications and non-coding RNAs to DNA elimination

Applicants must be curious, highly motivated, have demonstrated the ability to design and carry out creative, independent research, and have excellent communication skills using the English language and demonstrated scholarship through publication in internationally recognized English language journals.

We are located in a new state-of-the-art space in the highly collegial Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver. We have recently initiated a 5-year, $20 million program in RNA, The RNA Bioscience Initiative for which I am one of the directors. The CU Medical School and our Department is a great place to do science.

Denver, CO is a multicultural, metropolitan city. The nearby Rocky Mountains offer a spectacular scenic backdrop and an array of outdoor recreational opportunities within a 15-minute to two-hour drive from Denver. The climate in Denver is relatively mild and dry, and Denver boasts over 300 days of sunshine per year! Winters are mild, with average daytime highs of 45 degrees; summers are warm and dry, with average daytime highs of 85 degrees.

Applicants with significant experience in at least one or more of the following will be given priority:
1. Epigenetics, chromatin, telomeres, and DNA damage/repair
2. Use of in vitro DNA damage/repair or telomere systems
3. Mitosis, centromeres, or chromosome segregation
4. DNA replication timing, chromosome isolation, or higher order chromosome structure analysis
5. ChIP and ChIP-seq
6. Genomics and Bioinformatics
7. Non-coding RNAs and chromatin
8. Immunocytochemistry of nuclei and chromosomes including DNA and/or RNA FISH
9. Microinjection or laser microdissection method
