We have recently been awarded funds by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council to investigate the physical properties of graphene grown on boron nitride using molecular beam epitaxy with a particular focus on the properties of strained graphene. We now wish to recruit a postdoctoral research fellow who will be responsible for the experimental characterisation of these new materials, as well as fabricating prototype devices, investigating the properties of adsorbed molecular layers, and undertaking electrical measurements at low temperature. The successful candidate should have extensive experience of the use of ambient atomic force microscopy (AFM) and conducting AFM under ambient conditions including the acquisition of images with lattice resolution. Applications are particularly welcome from candidates with additional experience in one or more related areas such as fabrication of graphene devices, Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy, low temperature magnetotransport measurements and ultra-high vacuum scanning probe microscopy.

The postholder will work within a group of approximately 12 researchers including academics in the Schools of Physics & Astronomy (Beton, Novikov, Moriarty, Eaves, Foxon and Mellor) and Chemistry (Khlobystov) together with a team of postdocs and PhD students whose combined expertise spans MBE growth, scanning probe microscopy, electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, quantum transport phenomena and nanofabrication. The postholder will be encouraged to develop collaborations within this group to develop original lines of research activity related to strained epitaxial graphene.

The successful candidate should have either been awarded a PhD in physics, materials science, chemistry or a relevant discipline, or have submitted their PhD thesis prior to the commencement of the appointment.

This full-time post is fixed-term and is available immediately for a period of 2.5 years with an end date no later than 30 April 2020.
