Job Description
Queen Mary is one of the top research-led universities in the UK and it was ranked 9th among the UK multi-faculty universities in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014). All Post-doctoral researchers are part of the QMUL Doctoral College, which provides support with high-quality training and career development activities.We wish to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work in the research group of Dr James Garnett in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences at Queen Mary University of London.
The successful candidate will study surface proteins and secretion events essential for biofilm maturation in pathogenic E. coli strains. Specific gene knockouts in E. coli will be used to study biofilm growth, which will be coupled with chemical cross-linking and other biochemical/ biophysical techniques to identify and characterize functional partners in the biofilm matrix. There will also be an opportunity to follow up these explorations with structural biology studies. This appointment is funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Wellcome Trust.
Candidates must hold or be close to completing a PhD or equivalent qualification in bacterial Microbiology, Biochemistry or a relevant discipline and have an established track record of success in high-quality original research. Previous experience in E. coli biofilm growth, bacterial genetics and general molecular biology/ biochemistry techniques is essential. Knowledge and experience with structural biology techniques is desirable.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
The position is full time and available for 24 months. The salary will be £29,936 - £32,405 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Salary will be according to qualifications, skills and experience. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
