Job Description
The Arizona State University’s Biodesign Center for Applied Structural Discovery and Dr. William Graves invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the fields of physics and engineering of intense ultrafast photon beams. The areas of research span a range of topics important to the production and manipulation of coherent x-rays including femtosecond synchronization of multiple laser amplifiers with accelerator RF systems; the physics of coherent x-ray emission, high average and peak power ultrafast laser amplifier development, x-ray optics and detectors, and sophisticated controls and diagnostics of photon and electron beams using optical techniques. The successful candidate will become part of an interdisciplinary team of research groups at the Center for Applied Structural Discovery within Biodesign Institute.Essential Duties:
R&D in physics of coherent radiation emission along with high brightness electron beam physics. Development of methods to produce and manipulate coherent X-rays. Utilizing femtosecond synchronization of multiple laser amplifiers with accelerator RF systems. Development of high average and peak power ultrafast laser amplifier. R&D of x-ray optics and detectors, and sophisticated controls and diagnostics of photon and electron beams using optical techniques. Training and supervising graduate and undergraduate students. Communications involving meticulousness in writing; including lab reports, scientific publications and/or protocols. Working in multidisciplinary teams, in different research areas, academic units. Reviewing the scientific literature to develop sound research plans and interpret results. Devising or helping to draw up new research proposals and applying for funding and grants along with producing content for research publications and presentations. Work schedule is flexible including some evenings and weekend work if required by the project.
Environment:
Initial experiments will occur at the MIT Bates Research and Engineering Center (Middleton, MA) through September 2018. The CXLS will then be recommissioned at ASU in a world-class purpose-built 20,000 sq. ft. accelerator user facility. During the time of deployment at MIT Bates the successful applicant will be provided the option at no personal expense of a private room for lodging with convenient access to the MIT Bates facility and public transportation to Boston.
Qualifications:
• Applicants must have a recent Ph.D (within the past four years) in Physics, Optical Sciences and Engineering, or Electrical Engineering
• Demonstrated knowledge of ultrafast laser and/or x-ray technologies
• Excellent verbal, presentation, and technical report writing skills
• Ability to work within multidisciplinary project team
To Apply:
Please submit to exlsjobs@asu.edu. as a single pdf document the following materials: 1) a cover letter specifying relevant qualifications and training, 2) curriculum vitae, 3) statement of current research interests and expertise (2-page maximum), 4) contact information for at least three professional references, and 5) list of recent publications. Please include “Application for Postdoctoral Research Associate – Ultrafast Laser and X-Ray Science Optics” in the email subject line. Initial review of applications will begin on July 24, 2017; As long as the position is not filled, review will continue every week thereafter until the search is closed. A background check is required for employment. Salary is $47,476 per year.
