We are now looking to hire a Senior Research Scientist – Lung Epithelium. The position will be placed in Gothenburg, Sweden.

As Senior Research Scientist – Lung Epithelium you will be placed in the Bioscience Lung Epithelium Department within the Respiratory, Inflammation and Autoimmunity IMED. The department is dedicated to conducting research to promote lung epithelial health with the aim to develop novel treatments for respiratory diseases including COPD, Asthma and pulmonary fibrosis. Important research questions include (1) the epithelial response to insult (e.g. pathogens and inhaled toxins and irritants) in context of inflammation, host-defense and injury and (2) mechanisms involved in epithelial maintenance and repair. The Lung Epithelium Department offers a dynamic and science-centric research environment bringing together internal scientists, post-docs and students and, importantly, external academic collaborators with the shared ambition to do great science in order to address unmet patient needs.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Works independently designing, performing and analysing experiments and identifies and solves associated problems.
• Interprets experimental data and plans of further experiments.
• To be an effective and committed team member in supporting drug discovery projects to meet objectives and milestones.
• To conduct where appropriate in parallel more than one area of work to agreed timelines.
• Contributes to writing peer-reviewed publications, abstracts and patents.
• Responsible for ensuring that her/his scientific knowledge influences project progression in accordance with portfolio priorities.
• Maintains an awareness of current developments in the literature.
• Independently schedules work-plans over agreed timelines so that the team objectives are met.
• Participate in external collaborations.
• May be a key member of an external collaboration or may supervise (not line manage) a Post-doc or external scientist at AZ.

Essential Requirements

• PhD with Post-doc or otherwise relevant experimental experience.
• Experience in handling and characterising airway epithelial cells, especially small airway epithelial cells and alveolar Type 2 cells.
• Experience with air liquid interface cultures and more complex co-culture systems.
• An understanding of Respiratory Diseases.
• Excellent scientific laboratory skills and an ability to apply understanding of basic cell biology, pharmacology, biochemistry or immunology to address key research questions.
• Good networking and communication skills and delivery focus

Desirable Requirements

• A strong scientific publication record will be an advantage.
