Postdoctoral researcher in neuroscience or cardiology

Postdoctoral Researcher in Neuroscience or Cardiology

Position available for a recent graduate with interest in the cardiac and respiratory effects of ion channel mutations in epilepsy. The most common cause of mortality in epilepsy is sudden unexpected death (SUDEP). Although the exact causes of SUDEP remain unknown, seizures are thought to somehow initiate lethal cardiac and/or respiratory dysfunction. We are trying to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying SUDEP by examining mouse genetic epilepsy models using a combination of molecular approaches (immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR, western blot), in vivo physiological recordings (electroencephalography, electrocardiography, plethysmography), and in vitro brain slice and cardiomyocyte recordings.

Qualified applicants should have a Ph.D, M.D. Ph.D, or equivalent, be highly motivated and capable of working independently with a strong background in molecular biology (including protein and RNA work) and/or brain slice or cardiomyocyte electrophysiology. Preferred applicants will have experience working with mouse transgenic mutants, especially cre-lox conditional expression models.

Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience. Our lab is supported by multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is part of the vibrant and growing Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, LA (LSUHSC-S). The department provides a supportive and stimulating research environment with a strong emphasis on cardiovascular disease. Located in the pines of northwest Louisiana, Shreveport is a livable small city known for its festivals and easy-going lifestyle.
