ob Description
The focus of my laboratory [http://www.med.upenn.edu/apps/faculty/index.php/g20000320/p8580228] concerns the molecular and cellular mechanisms that govern the development of the mammalian forebrain. We use mouse genetics, forebrain slice and dissociated culture techniques, as well as mouse and human embryonic stem cells in culture and transplantation experiments to study the fate determination of GABAergic interneurons of the cerebral cortex. In addition, we are using human stem cell-derived neurons as tools for the study of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions in neuropsychiatric disease, and for cell-based therapies for intractable epilepsy and psychosis. In one such project, we are studying the hypothesis that mitochondrial defects influence the penetrance of schizophrenia in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.
This position requires previous cell culture experience, preferably with human stem cells. Additional experience in developmental neuroscience and basic molecular biology (i.e. RT-PCR, basic cloning, CRISPR-CAS) is strongly preferred. Proficiency in spoken and written English is required. |
